Pediatric neurology

Pediatric neurology, as a specialised area of pediatrics, focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). We speak of infant or developmental neurology for children under three years of age and pediatric neurology for older children.

Our pediatric neurologist is Dr Zsófia Laufer.

Our clinic deals with neurological disorders in infants and older children up to the age of 18, including

– developmental disorders,

– nervous system diseases and injuries,

– neuromuscular (nerve-muscle system) disorders and

– other neurological problems.

Neurological disorders and diseases can be inherited or acquired (e.g. as a result of an injury).

Complaints, symptoms

In infancy, the following symptoms, among others, draw attention to the fact that it is worth seeing a developmental neurologist:

– cranial deformity,

– delayed or atypical motor development,

– inadequate muscle tone,

– uncoordinated muscle or eye movements, and

– feeding problems.

Typical neurological symptoms in early childhood may include

– speech disorder,

– problems with motor coordination,

– headaches and

– spasmodic activity.

In adolescence

– headaches,

– dizziness, fainting spells,

– sensory disturbances,

– numbness of limbs and

– movement disorders

may occur.

In addition, we often examine the child in the presence of symptoms, like

– behavioural disorders,

– learning problems,

– eating disorders or

– increased stress level.

The purpose of the specialist care is to determine and treat neurological problems as early as possible, to restore the child’s health and quality of life, and to support his/her further development.

We welcome patients with neurological symptoms from newborn to 18 years of age at our practice. The examination usually consists of the following steps:

taking medical history: the neurologist will discuss the child’s problems, symptoms and the available medical history with the parent(s) (and, if the child is old enough, with the child),

– the physical examination will cover neurological signs such as reflexes, muscle strength, and balance,

– if necessary, additional instrumental diagnostic tests are requested, some of which are available locally and some at our partner institutions, such as brain imaging tests (MRI, CT), electroencephalogram (EEG) and various nerve and muscle tests.

The next step is the development of an individual treatment plan based on a thorough discussion with the parent, including the child in the case of older children. Therapy can be

– medication,

– other therapeutic options such as motor skills development, speech therapy, various developmental therapies, diets, etc.,

the latter can be recommended by the neurologist.

For some of the problems, several medical specialties may be involved during the examination, and the pediatric neurologist often cooperates with representatives of associated professions: physiotherapists, speech therapists, psychologists. If it can be excluded that the child’s complaints are of organ origin, it may be justified to take a bio-psycho-social approach to explore family and social relationships, with special regard to the mother-child relationship. In our clinic, we have created an environment that provides children and their parents safety during examinations and treatment.

You can get rid of the pain

Living with persistent or recurring pain is physically and psychologically torturous. Moreover, the pain is not constant and can increase over time, as long-lasting intense pain lowers the pain threshold in the affected part of the body. Patients experience increasing, even unbearable pain, their quality of life and vitality deteriorate, and their family and environment […]

Nerve ablation

Nerve ablation means the elimination of the pain transmitting nerve fibres that innervate the joints, so that the sensation cannot reach the brain and cannot become conscious. Most often, we treat the nerves in the small joints of the spine and the larger joints of the limbs. In this way, spinal and other joint problems […]
