Pain management clinic

  • Quick help for chronic pain.
  • Pain therapy based on professional treatments to eliminate the cause of the pain.
  • Treatments with targeted procedures at the regions of pain, accomplished with the integrated work of a medical team led by a neurosurgeon specialist.

Our pain management service, available in our outpatient clinic, was created to relieve and eliminate pain of different origins and in different areas.

We usually consult different doctors with our different physical symptoms. However, in our pain management clinic, the basis of the neurosurgeon-led professional work is to eliminate the painful symptoms caused by the disease in a complex way, by incorporating doctors of different specialties (e.g. neurology, internal medicine, psychosomatics, etc.) into searching for the root cause of the pain in the human body and the treatment procedure too.

Acute pains such as

  • sciatica
  • lumbago
  • pinched nerve
  • spontaneous low back pain
  • or facial (trigeminal) neuralgia, or chronic pains, like
  • various types of arthritis
  • recurrent pain caused by back and neck injuries
  • migraine headache
  • or varying musculoskeletal pains associated with the loss of movement

can be effectively relieved or eliminated in the pain management clinic.

Our neurosurgeon specialist leading the pain management outpatient  clinic is Dr Máté Nagy while on Friday afternoons the neurosurgeon is Dr. Levente Ilyés.

Pain management clinic – pain therapy: the course of the examination and the therapy

Targeted pain therapy is the most efficient way to manage intense prolonged, chronic or acute pains. However, not always the neurosurgeon is the first stop! That’s why it is important, if possible, to contact our registered patients before the first appointment, and to ensure that our patients receive the most effective, fast professional care based on their complaints, in order to avoid unnecessary examinations.

A specialist in the field of the nervous system’s functioning is competent  at relieving as many types of pain as possible. Our neurologist Dr Ágota Magyari and our neurosurgery specialists, Dr Máté Nagy, head of the Pain Management Clinic, and Dr Levente Ilyés,  member of the specialist medical team, help each other in the professional team to help the patient recover as quickly as possible without pain.

I. Examination:

  • When taking the medical record, the specialist inquires about the complaints, symptoms and medical history of the patient.
  • Review all the available previous findings (patients are asked to bring their previous CD format findings with them as well).
  • By completing musculoskeletal and neurological examinations, the specialist notices the nature of the possible damage caused by the disease.
  • Based on the examination, the specialist decides whether an additional imaging check-up (MR, CT or X-ray) is necessary for the proper diagnosis.

II. Pain relief immediately!

Targeted, individualized pain relief, to be implemented at the site of the pain, can be initiated immediately, after which serious pain can be eased or even eliminated.

Depending on the nature of disease, pain relief may include:

  • injection therapy (pain killer, anti-inflammatory, joint block)
  • infusions (neuropathic cures)
  • prescribing special painkillers.

III. Management of the causes of the pain

It is good to know that if the cause of the pain does not disappear, it will return, so this is why important to explore the causes.

Mobility usually returns in a few days after the prompt pain relief and nerve functions also react accurately. This is the moment when the conditions become ideal to eliminate the cause of the pain – depending on the severity of the disease.

In case of musculoskeletal problems, manual therapy procedure can be started, medication or additional infusion therapy may also be considered.

Curative therapy of the disease is always starts on the recommendation of the specialist!

Follow-up is also a part of the treatment procedure. A focused attention is on the regularity of the patient’s follow-up, as adjustements in medication dosage may be needed or introduction of other therapies or treatments may be required.

Our pain management service, available in our outpatient clinic, was created to relieve and eliminate pain of different origins and in different areas.

Complex help in our pain management service

We provide complex help to our patients in our clinical practice. It is common that in addition to the physical complaints there are spiritual causes in the background of the pain. Our clinic specializes in having a well-trained psychiatrist, a team of psychologists including a health psychologist and a number of therapists to assist in the process of healing.

Symptoms that make it necessary to visit the clinic:

  • low back, back and neck pain
  • pain in the vertebral column radiating to the limbs
  • pain, numbness, sensory deficit, muscle weakness or paralysis at any point in the body
  • urinary or fecal incontinence
  • memory loss
  • coordination disorder during walking or moving
  • disc herniation, spinal stenosis, listhesis (unnaturally mobile vertebra), joint wear related to the small joints, vertebral fracture, vertebral and disc inflammations
  • chronic neuropathic and mixed pain syndromes, post laminectomy syndromes (also known as failed back surgery syndrome), degenerative scoliosis, complex regional pain syndrome, deafferentation pain, phantom pain, therapy resistent angina, herpes zooster neuralgia, pain due to spinal cord injury

Neuro- and spinal surgery, more precisely, the knowledge gained in these fields supports the professional work practiced personally by Dr Máté Nagy at our Polyclinic.

Nerve ablation

Nerve ablation means the elimination of the pain transmitting nerve fibres that innervate the joints, so that the sensation cannot reach the brain and cannot become conscious. Most often, we treat the nerves in the small joints of the spine and the larger joints of the limbs. In this way, spinal and other joint problems […]
