Angiology

Angiology is a medical specialty that deals with the functioning of the circulatory system, the vascular network, the arteries, the veins and the lymphatic system. Aim of the angiological examination is to assess the condition of the blood and lymphatic circulation, as well as the  cardiovascular system, to diagnose, to monitor and to treat the defects affecting these organ systems.

Who is recommended to see an angiologist?

Angiological examination is required if there are symptoms suggestive of a vascular disease or if patients have underlying conditions (like diabetes or hypertension) which may lead to adverse events such as the damage of the vascular system. To detect these complications and to start the treatment at the right time are extremely important, in order to improve the quality of life and life expectancy as well. The role of the angiologist is crucial in the prevention, treatment and the post-surgery follow-up process.

  • Over 50 years of age it is recommended to see the angiologist for screening even without complaints!
  • Angiological monitoring is definitely recommended if the appearance of cardiovascular diseases is common in the the patient’s family!

What are the symptoms with which you should consult an angiologist?

  • Leg pain due to leg strain or escalating pain in legs (mostly in the shank or thigh)
  • calf cramps at night
  • presence of hard-to-heal wounds and ulcers
  • edema and water retention in limbs
  • limb numbness
  • cold feet
  • feet and hand numbness of unknown origin

Diseases that require angiological control and treatment

Diseases of the arteries

  • arterial stenosis (blood vessel narrowing)
  • aortic stenosis, dilatation of the aorta
  • Raynaud’s syndrome (an autoimmune disease that can cause the narrowing of the arteries in the hand)
  • aneurysm (vascular bulge due to the weakness of the vessel wall)

Az angiológiai vizsgálat célja a vér- és nyirokkeringés, valamint az érrendszer állapotának feltérképezése, az ezeket érintő elváltozások diagnózisa, nyomon követése és kezelése.
