Emotional and Relational Balance –consultation and support for adults living with borderline personality disorder (BPD), as well as for their loved ones

Our consultation service is designed for adults and their close relatives—typically one or two family members—who experience intense emotional swings, unstable relationships and a deep sense of inner insecurity. It aims to foster deeper self-awareness, greater psychological understanding, more informed decision-making, steadier emotional functioning, more effective stress management and more harmonious relationships.

Who is this consultation for?

We recommend this consultation to those who

  • often experience intense emotional fluctuations and find their personal or work relationships ending abruptly and stormily, and wish to understand the causes and gain tools for change;
  • have recently received a diagnosis of borderline/emotionally unstable personality disorder, are waiting for psychotherapy, and do not want to face the challenges alone;
  • have previously completed specific psychotherapy (such as schema therapy, DBT, MBT or TFP), achieved significant progress, but now face new life changes and need support to maintain their balance;
  • are close family members seeking reliable information and support for their own mental wellbeing.

How does the consultation work?

This service is based primarily on the principles of General Psychiatric Management (GPM), an internationally recognised, evidence-based, practical approach that is still relatively new in Hungary and focuses on the everyday difficulties of borderline personality disorder. GPM is an integrative and flexible model that combines personalised psychoeducation with a focus on quality of life, daily functioning, and relationships. Evidence shows that GPM-based consultations can, in some cases, be effective on their own in supporting a more balanced lifestyle and more stable relationships.

Sessions are practical and grounded in everyday situations. They take place in a direct, accepting atmosphere and place strong emphasis on psychoeducation, constructive feedback, and homework tasks to encourage self-reflection and the application of new skills. The aim is to facilitate genuine, forward-moving change.

In addition to face-to-face sessions, online consultations are also available.

How can the consultation help?

It provides professional yet accessible information on the background and management of emotional and relational difficulties; helps to identify and address situations that trigger emotional fluctuations in time; develops stress management and supports the formation of effective coping strategies; offers support during times of life change; helps to understand and reshape relationship patterns; promotes a more stable self-image and improved self-esteem; supports constructive expression of needs; guides conflict resolution and the setting of healthy boundaries; fosters a positive vision for the future; and gives practical guidance for everyday life and longer-term goals.

The consultation process usually consists of 10–12 sessions held weekly. Before starting, we conduct an initial assessment interview to ensure everyone receives the most appropriate support.

Clients who have a written recommendation from their treating psychiatrist specifically for psychoeducational and life-management consultation for borderline personality disorder may schedule directly without the initial interview. The current medical note must confirm that the client is under psychiatric care, specify any prescribed medication, and confirm that they are suitable for psychotherapeutic support (i.e. not in crisis, not at acute risk of suicide or self-harm, and not actively using substances).

Support sessions (consultations) for relatives

Supporting relatives is equally important, as borderline personality disorder affects not only the person concerned but also their family and close relationships. Within the GPM framework, involving relatives is part of the recovery process.

Support sessions for relatives (typically one or two close loved ones, such as parents or partners) can help you

  • understand the main features of borderline personality disorder;
  • learn how to support your loved one without becoming overwhelmed yourself;
  • improve communication and conflict-resolution skills;
  • process your own emotional burdens.

Support sessions for relatives usually involve one to three meetings, with the possibility of extension if needed.
